The Assam cabinet on Tuesday approved the renaming of Karimganj district in the Barak Valley, bordering Bangladesh, as Sribhumi.

The Assam government on Tuesday decided to change the name of Karimganj district in the Barak Valley to Sribhumi, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

The Assam government renamed Karimganj district as ‘Sri Bhoomi’ honoring Tagore’s century-old reference. The Cabinet also finalised panchayat election dates and announced a Global Investment Summit for February 2025.

In a significant move, the Assam cabinet has renamed Karimganj district to Sribhumi, honoring Rabindranath Tagore's vision of the area as the ‘land of Maa Lakshmi’. The decision reflects the state government's commitment to acknowledge rich heritage through geographical renaming.

In a decision taken during the state Cabinet meeting on November 19, Karimganj district of Assam will be renamed as Sribhumi.
