Hoax bomb threats, many of which appeared to originate from Russian email domains, were directed on Tuesday at polling locations in five battleground states - Georgia, Michigan, Arizona, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania - as Election Day voting was underway,

"Unfortunately, when something bad happens, it is often claimed to be of Russian origin," a Russian official told Newsweek.

Multiple polling places in critical battleground states faced Election Day bomb threats on Tuesday, with the FBI ultimately linking the false threats to Russian actors in a new act of election meddling.

Officials in Fulton County, Ga., said they received "multiple calls" and the threats forced a brief closure of two polling places.

Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger confirmed Tuesday a bomb threat was made against a polling place, but he said it was of Russian origin and not credible. Raffensperger later clarified in a subsequent press conference that the threat affected between five and seven precincts in multiple Georgia counties.
