A surprise Avista power outage left 1,500 Spokane residents without electricity as part of a wildfire prevention measure amid high wind concerns.

Also wary of new fire starts, Avista Utilities shut off power to about 1,500 customers in the Indian Trail Neighborhood on Sunday afternoon. The service provider utilized a last-resort public safety mechanism to cut power during extreme wildfire risk conditions as a preemptive measure to avoid fire starts from power lines.

Avista Utilities have put in a Public Safety Power Shutoff in the Indian Trail area following weather advisories.

Avista Utilities announced on Facebook that a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) was implemented in the Indian Trail area of Spokane County due to high fire risk and strong winds on Sunday afternoon.

Pacific Gas and Electric Co. announced that 13 counties, including Butte and Colusa, will likely experience public safety power shutoffs.
