Boeing will lay off more than 2,500 workers in the U.S. states of Washington, Oregon, South Carolina and Missouri, according to federally required filings posted on Monday and a union official, as part of the debt-heavy U.

In filings made Monday, Boeing said it would be laying off more than 2,000 workers in Washington and Oregon amid a year of strikes and safety issues.

About 220 South Carolina Boeing workers will be out of work after the new year. The financially struggling aerospace company announced the layoffs, expected to begin Jan. 17. All but eight of the employees losing their jobs work in North Charleston,
